Ungenerated Beginnings

“What came before the beginning?” — it is a question that has haunted us from the beginning.

Epicharmus, the fifth century BCE poet, quipped, “The gods were always there: they were never missing… But Expanse is said to have been the first god to be born. How could that be? He had nothing to come from and nowhere to go at first” (Diogenes LaĆ«rtius, Lives III.10). Where did space come from? And what existed in the ‘space’ in now inhabits before it was born?
